Companions

Overview

What Companions Are

In Embrathis, a companion is far more than an ordinary animal, regardless of how familiar or unassuming its appearance may be. Whether it takes the form of a common household creature or one of the world's more extraordinary fauna, a companion possesses intelligence comparable to that of a human. Capable of complex thought, reasoning, understanding, and independent decision-making, these creatures have personalities, opinions, desires, and loyalties entirely their own. Though they may retain the natural instincts and mannerisms of their species, their capacity for thought and understanding extends far beyond that of an ordinary animal.

What makes a companion truly extraordinary, however, is the profound magical bond it shares with its partner. This connection reaches beyond affection, familiarity, or even the strongest relationship between a person and their beloved pet. Bound soul-to-soul and mind-to-mind, the two share a spiritual connection through which thoughts, emotions, and telepathic communication may pass. It is an intimacy of understanding that ordinary words cannot always achieve, allowing two very different beings to know and communicate with one another in ways otherwise impossible.

Yet for all the closeness such a bond provides, neither individual loses their sense of self. A companion is not an extension of its partner, nor does the connection grant unquestioned obedience or ownership over another mind. Both remain individuals, capable of disagreement, independent judgment, and choices of their own. At its heart, the bond is a relationship between two distinct souls, one that may grow and deepen throughout their lives.

Pets

Ordinary animals may be cherished friends, loyal protectors, or beloved members of a household. Though capable of affection, intelligence, and deep emotional connections with their caretakers, pets do not possess the human-level intelligence, extraordinary abilities, or magical soul bond that distinguish true companions.

Dragons

Dragons share an extraordinary, innate bond with those known as the Bonded. While this connection bears similarities to other companion bonds, its origins, nature, and magical significance are unique to dragons and their partners.

Getting One

How To Acquire A Companion

Companions are available to characters of every magical race and magic, and may be obtained through several different means. Whether a character begins their journey with a companion, acquires one through the Shadow Market, or forms a new bond through their adventures, these extraordinary creatures can become an important part of their story. Characters may have only one companion at a time.

Companion Rarity

Companions follow the established fauna rarity classifications of Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Mythical. Common companions are the only creatures available to Organic Shifters as free starting companions. Uncommon and Rare companions must be earned through in-character play, rather than simply selected at character creation or purchased.

Characters of any magical class may acquire rarer companions through the Shadow Market, quests, or special awards. A companion's rarity does not determine its size-based abilities; those are governed by the Magic System

Approval Or Tracking

Once obtained, companions should be documented in your character's Inventory, including how they were acquired, whether through an innate Shifter bond, a Shadow Market purchase, a quest, or a staff award. This is where you will detail their traits, appearance, and overall personality.

Companions must follow the rarity restrictions and ability progression appropriate to their method of acquisition. If you're uncertain whether a particular creature is eligible, how it should be classified, or which size category it falls under, contact staff for clarification.

Communication

Human-Level Intelligence

Despite their animal forms, companions possess intelligence comparable to that of humans. They are capable of understanding language, recognizing complex social situations, forming their own beliefs and opinions, and making independent decisions. They may develop friendships, rivalries, preferences, and relationships beyond the individual to whom they are bonded.

However, their intelligence does not make them human. Companions retain the instincts, natural behaviors, and physical limitations of their species. A cat may understand a complicated conversation perfectly well and still be fascinated by a fluttering curtain, while a horse may possess the reasoning of a person without abandoning its natural herd instincts.

Their thoughts and personalities are entirely their own, and a companion's intelligence should never be mistaken for unquestioning obedience.

Telepathic Communication

Although companions possess human-level intelligence, they are not inherently telepathic. Rather, their ability to communicate through thought comes exclusively from the magical soul bond they share with their partner. This connection allows the two to exchange thoughts and emotions directly, transcending the need for spoken language and the physical limitations of the companion's species.

This telepathic connection exists only between a companion and their bonded partner. Companions cannot communicate telepathically with other individuals and must rely upon their partner to translate their thoughts to those outside the bond. Likewise, their partner must relay anything they wish to communicate back, unless the companion can otherwise understand it.

Beast Affinity Mages cannot communicate with companions through their animal-speech magic. Due to the sacred, soul-tied nature of the companion bond, Loom magic cannot access or circumvent this connection.

Despite the extraordinary closeness of their connection, the bond does not grant unrestricted access to one another's minds. Companions and their partners remain separate individuals, each with private thoughts, independent wills, and the ability to choose what they share.
