How Gameplay Works

Overview

Introduction

Shadow of the Shattered is a collaborative, character-driven roleplay where stories unfold through the choices, actions, and relationships of its characters. From everyday encounters and personal character development to dangerous quests and world-changing events, there are countless ways to participate in the unfolding story of Embrathis.

Most roleplay is freeform, allowing players to explore their characters and develop stories together without complicated mechanics. However, certain types of threads involve additional rules, progression systems, staff oversight, or rewards. Understanding how these different forms of gameplay work, and when to use their corresponding thread labels, will help you navigate the site and make the most of your character's adventures.

Posting Expectations

Shadow of the Shattered welcomes writers of all experience and literacy levels, with no minimum or maximum word count for ordinary roleplay posts. Whether you prefer short, conversational replies or lengthy, descriptive prose, you're free to write in whatever style feels most comfortable. What matters most is giving your writing partners something meaningful to respond to, whether through dialogue, actions, observations, or the development of a scene.

Roleplay is a collaborative experience, and every player should have the freedom to make decisions for their own characters. Avoid godmodding or powerplaying, including controlling or assuming another character's actions, thoughts, emotions, or the outcome of an interaction without permission. Leave room for your partners to react, make choices, and contribute to the direction of the story.

When writing with others, be mindful of established posting orders and communicate with your partners about pacing, absences, or changes in plans. There is no expectation that every post must match the length of the previous one. Some scenes call for elaborate storytelling, while others flow naturally through shorter exchanges.

Single-post threads are welcome for character development or storytelling, but ongoing threads in which a player repeatedly replies to themselves are not permitted. Once a thread is finished, mark the final post with **FIN**, **END**, or another clear completion note, and notify staff so it can be archived.

Certain quests, events, and mechanically governed threads have additional posting requirements, including turn order, action limits, or time restrictions. These will be explained through their corresponding gameplay rules and thread labels.
