Exploration

Exploration Rules

Exploration threads [EX] are threads where your character searches for, harvests/collects or barters for ingredients used as-is or, more commonly, used in crafting. Exploration threads can be anything from searching The Marrows for Firemoss or hunting down a vendor in the city that carries heaorvene roots and striking a deal.

Common items (this includes real-world flora and fauna) do not need exploration threads to obtain. They may be gathered, purchased, cultivated or otherwise acquired through normal roleplay. However, you must still note in-character that you have acquired such ingredient(s), and you can use that post as your source link for your inventory.

Uncommon & Rare items must be acquired via exploration thread, gifted by another player character, acquired in a drop, or otherwise won in-character or out-of-character.

Starting An Exploration

To start an exploration thread, simply post a thread in the board you are searching in using the [EX] prefix. Be sure to list what you are looking for, how many you are looking to find, and any applicable magic items or other magic that a character would be using to alter their chances of success (ex., passive magics, draconic senses, Shifter/Beast Affinity transformations) at the bottom of your opening post.

Once created, tag @Staff in the #tag-staff channel on discord with the link to the [EX] thread, what you are looking for, and how many of said component(s) you are looking for. If you have multiple different [EX] threads to link at once, be sure to only put one link per post, as these posts are deleted upon success.

Rarity & Discovery Odds

Once started, staff will roll every 5 posts to see if your character has found what they are looking for. Discovery rolls are Wisdom-based against a DC that depends on rarity. You will only be notified via the Random Encounter account if you do succeed on a discovery roll, not if you fail it, so do continue posting if it has been a few days after a post threshold and you have not seen the Random Encounter account reply yet.

Harvesting Resources

When discovered, some resources require a harvesting roll (ie., collecting sap from the heartbark tree). Harvesting rolls are Intelligence-based. Other resources, like naturally shed animal parts (ie., moonpie shells), do not require a harvesting roll and can be added to your inventory upon discovery. The Random Encounter account will list if a harvesting attempt is needed and the success or failure of said attempt. For uncommon components, each character in the thread gets one attempt to harvest the component successfully. For rare components, each character in the thread gets two attempts to harvest the component successfully, with the second attempt rolled at disadvantage.

What happens on failure goes here.

Who Gets The Componet

The component of any [EX] thread goes to the thread creator, even if they do not harvest it, and discovery chances are rolled based on the thread creator's Wisdom. The thread creator can forgo their claim in-character and gift the component to another character in the [EX] thread or another thread. If a component changes hands in-character, be sure to note this in a summary below your post (ex., Jane gifts one batch of Ember Pine resin to John). The receiver can then link to this post for the proof link in their inventory.

Harvesting Multiple Components

Each successful harvesting attempt or collection yields one use of a component. You are free to continue a single [EX] thread to find multiple of the same component, but the characters involved would need to find a different source to harvest from and be subject to discovery chance and any applicable harvesting rolls for each subsequent component gained. Looking for multiple components must be pre-declared in your opening post and the #tag-staff channel.

Private Cultivation

Cultivation Requirements

Any common or uncommon tier flora listed can be privately grown and cultivated by PCs, as long as they meet the requirements to do so. These requirements consist of stats, exploration threads, or both.

Common Flora

To grow your own common-tier flora, a character must have an Intelligence score of at least 10 and a Wisdom score of at least 10.

Uncommon Flora

To grow your own uncommon-tier flora, a character must have an Intelligence score of at least 12 and a Wisdom score of at least 13.

Rare Flora

To grow your own rare-tier flora, a character must have an Intelligence score of at least 14 and a Wisdom score of at least 15. Not all rare-tier components can be privately cultivated for lore or practicality reasons. The Random Encounter Account will note upon harvesting if a rare component can be privately cultivated, presuming you meet the other requirements.
