Factions & Guilds Overview

Factions & Guilds

Factions & Guilds Compared

The most important difference is scale. Factions are built to affect the setting and its ongoing plot. Guilds are built to give characters a shared structure for play, experience, and progression.

Factions

Type: Faction

Scope: Factions are broad political, social, religious, ideological, or plot-driven movements.

Impact: Their actions can influence ongoing plot and create meaningful changes within the world.

Authority: Factions carry greater authority and consequence within the setting than guilds.

Commitment: Membership is a larger commitment. Characters involved in a faction may be drawn into major developments, conflicts, decisions, and faction-driven plot.

What They Offer: Factions give characters the opportunity to influence the direction of the story and take an active role in shaping the world.

Guilds

Type: Guild

Scope: Guilds are smaller organizations built around a shared purpose, profession, interest, or kind of work.

Impact: Their influence is usually focused on the characters, members, and communities involved rather than world-scale plot.

Authority: Guilds carry less setting-wide authority than factions, but they can develop and grow through activity and progression.

Commitment: Guilds are generally more flexible and accessible. The exact expectations and methods of joining vary between individual guilds.

What They Offer: Guilds can provide experience, progression, perks, and new opportunities for character involvement.

Choosing A Group

Which Fits Your Character?

Factions and guilds offer very different kinds of involvement. The better fit depends on what role you want the character to play, how deeply you want them involved in larger events, and what you want their membership to provide. You may apart of a faction and up to two guilds at any given time, allowing you freedom to explore different facets of your character and their story.

A Faction May Be The Better Fit If

  • You want the character involved in major plot developments and changes within the world.
  • The character has strong political, social, religious, or ideological convictions they want to act upon.
  • You want their choices to carry larger consequences for the setting or its people.
  • You are interested in a greater level of commitment, authority, conflict, or responsibility.

A Guild May Be The Better Fit If

  • You want the character involved in an organization built around a profession, purpose, interest, or kind of work.
  • You are interested in earning experience, progression, and useful perks through group activity.
  • You want structured opportunities for threads, miniquests, training, or shared goals.
  • You want meaningful group involvement without the same degree of world-scale authority or plot commitment.

Creating A Group

Creating A Faction

Factions are major, world-facing organizations. They are not created by completing a fixed checklist alone.

A faction develops through in-character plot progression. Characters must pursue the idea through relevant quests, build its place within the world through play, and create enough story momentum for the faction to become established.

Faction Creation Focus

  • Develop the faction through in-character decisions and actions.
  • Advance its goals through relevant quests and plot progression.
  • Establish its influence, purpose, and place within the world through play.

Creating A Guild

Guilds follow a structured creation path. Rather than needing to alter world-scale plot, a proposed guild must meet established requirements that show it has members, a place to operate, and enough activity to function in play.

Guild Creation Requirements

  • Recruit the required number of members.
  • Establish the required location or locations.
  • Complete the required miniquests.
  • When all tasks have been completed, reach out to your admin chat turning in all links to relevant threads, and request a guild board.
