Basic Magic Rules

Overview

Magic is a massive part of the world and gameplay on the Shadow of the Shattered. All available races and subraces—Humans, Deviants, and Variants—have access to specific types of magic and the features that come with them, which can change and grow through a system of tier-based upgrades, as well as having access to skills. Below is a simplified version of the magic system and a summary of relevant rules for certain magic users.

Core Magic Rules

  • Tier Progression: Currently, there are three tiers available for characters to achieve. Movement through these tiers is based on posts-per-tier, not on lifetime totals:
Base Tier: Zero [ 0 ] new posts. This is where the character automatically begins at character creation, or in terms of variants, when they earn their custom magic.
◆ Second Tier: One hundred fifty [ 150 ] new posts.
◆ Third Tier: Three hundred [ 300 ] new posts.
  • Switching After Third Tier: On Determination Day, if a PC switches to a new magic after they’ve accomplished Third Tier, they begin their new magic path at Second Tier, and they owe the per-tier post amounts to progress (e.g., they must make 300 posts to upgrade from Second Tier to Third Tier in the new magic). This is true regardless of how many posts have been made overall.
  • Switching Before Second Tier: On Determination Day, if a PC has not yet met the required post count to reach Second Tier, they may still switch their magic to another Base Tier core magic. Their post count will start over in achieving Second Tier, however.
  • Stat Rewards on Switch: PCs who switch magic and begin at Second Tier will also keep their earned stat rewards. They will not receive another stat bonus when they switch down to Second Tier; this is only valid once.
  • Loom Forfeiture (Consent Assumed): In certain situations, consent is assumed, and the Loom may remove a Loom mage’s magic entirely. Mechanically, this is handled similarly to how death is handled. In-character, this is how the Loom keeps the peace required to maintain their utopian society.
  • Resisting the Loom: PCs do have the option to attempt to resist the Loom’s mental dissection, but it is excruciatingly painful, and the Loom will notice. Higher WIS stats or boosts help endure the process or even bypass it without detection.
  • Keepers’ Access: Oathwoven Keepers have access to every Loom magic class at any given time, up to Second Tier. In order to keep them from abusing this power, the Loom gives them heavy debuffs to their physical stats [Str/Dex/Con], but this ability is only granted to those who have put in significant time and proven their loyalty by rising through the ranks of the Keepers.
